julian shapiro's workout program | review

the problem was i could never find a program that i was sure was backed by research and that i was confident i could follow to a T then ali abdaal underlined how the julian shapiro (julian.com) workout program had worked for him so i gave his "guide to building muscle" a read. It was amazing.  A must read if i have ever read one. the problem most people have, myself included, with starting to workout properly is the same. How to start, where to start. Not trusting and understanding workout programs, not finding ones hard enough - or only finding ones to difficult. Julian does an incredible job explaining how to build muscle for a scientific standpoint and then links that in with a step by step guide of how to get started weight training. with simple steps to see whether you are making progress or not. AN absolute must read if you are looking to start weight training but don't know where to start.

training like a pro runner every day for 30 days (results are insane)

at the start of lockdown i was unfit in the past i had been an ok runner getting sub 20 minute 5k's on multiple occasions at the time of lockdown i would have found that hard I wanted that to change so i set about training I timed my tempo runs each week my first 4km tempo run (tempo= at race pace) took me over 20 minutes but after a month of training that was down to just 12 minutes im no training program expert but i did a fair amount of research before starting training and this worked for me be sure to take rest or go easier when you need but try to always start of the day with some push ups or exercise of some kind to get your adrenaline pumping nice and early and set your body and mind up ready for longer training later in the day. By waking up doing exercise I really find you basically tell your body, "yeah we are doing this today" my training program was this: mon abs easy run (25mins) athleanX home workout plan tue abs intervals (nike run club app) eg. 8x200m w/ ...

I watche the entire *important videos* playlist so you dont have to

well as someone who, as my friends would quickly tell you, is not well versed on popular culture as some others this was a rollercoaster. I'm not sure what I experienced but i would say the experience was almost worth it The john cena prank call, which i had somehow never seen before, despite knowing the meme, was probably the highlight  I suppose it is almost out done by "the colour red" search. Wow a true masterpiece of modern art. if you have some spare time, there are probably better things you could do with it but don't let you pull this of. If you do this purely for entertainment of for a deeper understanding of "culture" it is probably worth it- doesnt take that long, and certainly an experience. 10/10 would rate it easier than runnning a marathon

I watch the entire philosophy crash course so you don't have to

crash course (the popular youtube channel) is one of the best resources online. The amount of help they have been to me is incredible and have a resource like this on such a range of topics is amazing. However the philosophy crash course does not live up to some of their others. Watching it was interesting and gave a decent overview, which is as much as you can expect. But as someone who doesn't actually study philosophy other than in their own time I think i learnt my from other videos such as the school of life

natural highs | daily not daily

Naval Ravikant made a popular tweet where he listed some highs that don't lead to subsequent lows. After going for a run this went through my head. But after giving it some thought i am not sure that exercise does fit into this category of activities. After most types of exercise you get a release of what I believe is called seratonin, a chemical which in effect makes you feel good. This is the high. But exercise in a lot of forms leads to lows afterwards, I think of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and the need to recover in order to not feel sore the next day. So that left me wondering, what does fit into this category. NAVAL SAYS: Highs that don’t lead to subsequent lows: • Meditation, gratitude, prayer, journaling, unconditional love. • Yoga, exercise, play, nature walks. • Creating art, reading for fun, singing, poetry. • Practicing a craft, pursuing curiosity, work done for its own sake, flow.  on the whole i think i would have to agree with him It is pretty cool to...

Biologically dissatisfied but punching fear in the face helps subdue these feelings | daily leanings #5

We are meant to live in a state of permanent dissatisfaction Biologically we are made this way It is the most optimal from an evolutionary standpoint to always be after more I have to remind myself of this sometimes Because we don't have to listen  Do something that scares you everyday - a piece of advice i attempt to listen too as much as possible something i learnt recently: Skim reading a book called brain matter i learnt that living longer means consuming less calories and having fermented foods that protect your microbiome in your stomach (along with a lot of other things obviously - these are just two the book suggests) If you couldn't tell from reading that I dont really understand it But anyways i will be trying to not bulk to the extent some bodybuilders do and i will be trying to have more fermented products. whilst also trying to follow andrew hubermans advice (hot and cold exposure frequently, fast 12hrs a day, 3hrs of low intensity exercise a week, resistance train...

Attention is Now a Valuable Asset, is this Why We Are Now so Precious with our Own? | Daily Ramblings #4

Lets start with books Books are very important they contain stories stories are pivotal to our lives they are around us everywhere each of us tells ourselves a different story everyday Books, bestselling books are the height of stories at least in long form Or that is what they once were nowadays it is more how you present the book, than the contents of the book, which matter by present i mean how it is written recently i read the millenium trilogy: which most people will know as the trilogy including The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo They have new information, a new plot point or twist so frequently it is hard not to stay engaged. a good story nowadays needs to be presented in this fast paced format, (think tiktok)  even if it is a book, the writing style needs to be incredibly fast paced the hook needs to be exceptional I dont know whether this is a bad thing or not but it does mean that our society is shifting more and more to simply not being able to consume anything in long form...

Desire | Daily #3

It is nearly Christmas It is kind of a time for consideration I've been wondering about me Getting caught up in thought loops about itI have this deep deep desire to do really well at something Be the best sailor Be the only adventure racer Be the Richest or the Most famous and I don't exactly know why I think I want this because I want to be respected and be able to get all the 'friends' I want and speak to whomever I want To be honest I think those reasons are valid. I understand the statements about don't try being famous or rich. Or it is not worth it. But to be honest I don't believe that. I certainly believe becoming financially independent is very important. From then onwards I want to do whatever I want. Create, invest, change. That kind of nonsense. Just at the moment I worry I don't have the desire to really do it. And that is pretty scary. But there is a lot of time. I really shouldn't worry that much. Realistically we should all do whatever w...

study skill not luck | Daily #2

i think it is notable that a lot of the books i have studied for english are the authors first novels this seems to be a recurring theme right now we're doing frankenstein i have a theory that this is because they are very easy to analyse in most first time novels the writers draw heavily from their life which makes analysing contexts and inferences a whole lot easier however im not sure how sensible this is it is all well and good to be able to understand what makes a good novel but if what makes a good novel, as in the case of frankenstein and the bell jar, is the authors life not entirely their story telling,  then why study it? is the purpose of english not to make students be able to write well? Not all students have lived such a well read or fascinating life shouldn't these students be studying books that are purely written well so they can learn how to write well otherwise is the subject not practically biographical history I like to learn from people who have repeata...

A future Billion Dollar Crypto, the Next Harry Potter and The Value of everyday | Daily Email #1

In the first coronavirus lockdown I got into the habit of doing things everyday. Posting things, everyday. Doing this was very valuable. To get to the point where anything you or I make is valuable enough for people to want to read it is hard. It takes a lot of practice.  Simply, I don't think I get enough practice without committing to everyday. So here we are. Hopefully I learn a lot. And hopefully anyone who reads this will learn something too. ============================================== CURIOUS (DESO) Recently I have been reading about DeSo. It is a blockchain project and crypto currency designed to be used with social networks. Unlike Bitcoin or Eth which are designed more to make Decentralised finance a reality. The idea of decentralised social media is intriguing to me. And clearly to investment firms - many of which invested many many millions into DeSo.  The "problem" with social media nowadays is that there are massive corporations making billions of pounds....

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck ǀ Book Review

Image
Reading a Mice and Men is the only experience I have with reading Steinbeck's work. From what I remember I didn't enjoy reading that book until the final few paragraphs so with this book I prepared myself for the long haul. This book follows the Joads as they make there way from the central states out to California to find work. What makes this interesting is the large lack of work actually in California. Then why did they go? That is what you are probably thinking. Well that is where this books true point comes across. Steinbeck uses dramatic irony before many major events. Before the Joads actually experience a moment there is a chapter referring to what is about to happen, in detail, but not from the Joad's perspective. Sometimes from someone in the scene, sometimes from an anonymous narrator that only pops up in these chapters. What this does is allow you to view every situation from multiple perspectives, giving an insight into different people and there views upon soc...

A week in the life of at a Cyber Security company

Image
It seemed like it was pretty simple. Everyone idolised the job. Lots of money and lots of fun - what more could you ask for.  That is the impression I got online when researching a career in cyber security. You know, becoming an ethical hacker, like you see in the movies, typing away at 500 words per minute, changing the world as we know it and becoming the Robin Hood of the online world. I'm writing this not to put you off but to give some of my thoughts and feelings after spending my weeks work experience at a cyber security firm. Hopefully giving off a more truthful review than the people that portray it as the greatest career in the world with no negatives. "ha, the only problem is how you are going to spend all that money, ha ha... -  very funny.. First I'll let you know a bit about me so you get a sense of the lens through which I am looking at this career with. I am a sporty kid,  and was 16 when I actually did the work experience and studied computer science for m...

What is competitive sailing?

Image
People often tell me sailing isn't a sport, or at least that they don't understand it. The purpose of this blog is to explain it. There are 5 main disciplines of sailing which are known as Fleet racing, Handicap racing, Pursuit racing, Match racing and Team racing. The first, fleet racing, is the racing done competitively by many sailors and is the type of racing done at the Olympics. In this form of racing everyone races each other around a course in the same boat.  Second, handicap, is the type of racing done at most local lakes - slightly less competitive generally. It is where boats of different speeds race each other and the time it takes them to finish the course is recorded and then put into a system that adjusts everyone's time so that faster boats are given a handicap. Eg. no matter how slow your boat you can still win the race if you sail well. Thirdly, pursuit racing, is where the slowest boat sets off first then at specific intervals other faster boats set off. ...

Why you should read Born to Run

Image
Born to run is a fascinating book that dramatically altered the beliefs of a large population of one of the largest communities in the world, runners.  In summary the book suggests that, like the Mexican tribe Tarahumara, we should all run barefoot. If your anyone who hasn't read the book you might well be thinking that that sounds stupid. Why would you risk injuring and slowing yourself down? Well, despite what every doctor, physiotherapist and parent has every told you, Christopher McDougall suggests that we should run without these shoes. They lock up our feet - he goes as far as to say that wearing that nice pare of Nike running shoes actually increases your chance of injury. Don't let that confuse you, this is not a scientific myth buster - as the books slogan (the hidden tribe, the ultra runners, the greatest race the world has never seen) suggests this book is far more than that. In fact it is an adventure fuelled, slightly novelised, true story that has invigorated huge...
