A small change that could cause a massive change to the way our country works

Current MPs get paid in the region of 80,000 pounds, the prime minister and other senior figures get paid a little more, around £120,000

Many people think this is too much

I strongly disagree

I think wages of this amount are not enough to cover life in London, travel and long work hours

For below average or even average individuals becoming an MP is not the smartest decision

And for high value individuals it definitely isn’t, far higher wages could probably be earned in the private sector with a better work life balance as well.

Therefore a career as a politician does not attract the smartest people, who go get higher paying better life elsewhere, despite the fact these are probably the people we would like to have running our country.

Instead the job of a politician attracts the already rich, but power hungry.

As the one thing the job does offer is power and prestige, not really the desires we would like the people running our country to have.

I believe it would be a good idea to significantly increase the amount politicians are paid, to a minimum of £150,000

This change, when looking at the whole budget, would have relatively little impact.

But could lead to a drastic change in who runs our country.

(Whilst pay of 1+ million would be excessive, an increase that allows smart people interested in making the country better without having to sacrifice a healthy balance and a reasonable salary for the importance of their job makes sense.

This change would enable smarter and more normal people to become politicians, leaving us with less of the power hungry rich hoard we seem to end up with currently

I am yet to hear an argument against this, but am open to ideas
